In 1906, William K. Vanderbilt II purchased land in Centerport overlooking Northport Bay for the site of his summer residence. Over the next thirty years, a mansion, boathouse, seaplane hangar, and marine museum were added to the estate.
Vanderbilt travelled extensively in the 1920s and 1930s on his own yachts collecting for his estate’s museum. Marine life, birds, insects, reptiles, mammals, and cultural artifacts from Africa, Asia, and the Galápagos and Pacific Islands were collected, catalogued, and preserved by experts from the American Museum of Natural History.
Participants will tour the collections with a museum educator and create a watercolor illustration of a specimen in the Hall of Fishes.
