The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum has reopened its grounds and its galleries to the public, in accordance with local and state safety guidelines. The Museum welcomes a limited number of visitors on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.
Facial coverings and social distancing – keeping at least six feet away from others – are REQUIRED. Bathrooms will be open to one family/visitor group at a time, and a custodian will sanitize bathroom touchpoints regularly throughout the day.
All visitors must carry out everything they bring with them to the property, including picnic/food waste, and water or beverage containers.
The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum is open on Tuesdays from 12 pm – 4pm, and on Saturdays and Sundays, from 11:15 am to 4:00 pm. This schedule will change at the end of June, at which point the Museum will be open Tuesday – Sunday, 11:15 am to 5:00 pm, closed Mondays. On open days all our Museum wings are open, and there are options to take a tour of the historic mansion, or see a show in the Reichert Planetarium, or both! Click here for Hours & Admission.
The Museum wings and property close at 4 pm on open days, and the only area of the Museum open at night is the Charles and Helen Reichert Planetarium, on Friday and Saturday nights from 7:30 pm to 11:00 pm, and on Thursdays from 8:00 to 9:00 pm. At 9:00 pm on Friday and Saturday nights, the observatory with a 16” Meade Cassegrain style telescope is open to the public. If the weather does not permit, or there is no staff on hand to operate it, the observatory will remain closed. Evening planetarium show tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for students and seniors (62+), $7 for children 12 and under and free for children 2 and under. Click here for the planetarium show schedule, and to purchase tickets.
Planetarium shows play at 2 pm on Tuesdays, and at 11:30 am, 12:15, 1, 2, 3 and 4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets are available for purchase directly from our website. Tickets for daytime planetarium shows always include general admission to the grounds and Museum wings.
In order to get the most out of your visit, we suggest you allow 1-2 hours either before or after your planetarium show to see the rest of the property. Keep in mind that the Museum closes at 4 pm. Therefore, if you would like to see the 4 pm planetarium show, we suggest you arrive at 2 pm, as the Museum will be closed after your show. Likewise for the 3 pm planetarium show; we suggest you arrive at 1 pm, as the Museum will be closed after the 3 pm show concludes. The theater has a capacity of 145, and it is possible that any show sells out on any given day. We therefore recommend that visitors purchase their tickets to planetarium shows in advance, on our website. Tickets for daytime planetarium shows are $16 for adults, $15 for students and seniors (62+), $13 for children 12 and under, and free for children 2 and under.
General admission gives visitors access to the Museum grounds, and all our Museum wings. General admission does not give guests access to the area of the mansion where tours go. The only way to enter the living quarters of the mansion, and the areas of the mansion the tour covers, is to buy tickets for a mansion tour on the day of your visit at the admissions desk. Mansion tour tickets are not available for purchase online.
Guided Grounds tours are available on Saturdays and Sundays at 12:00pm and 1:30. Tours will be with a group no larger than 10 people. Mansion tour tickets include general admission. General admission gives visitors access to the Museum grounds, and all our Museum wings, including the Memorial Wing, the Habitat & Stoll Wing, and the Hall of Fishes.
Given the limited size of tours, there is always the possibility on any given day that one or all of our tours sells out. In order to give all guests the same opportunity, tickets can only be purchased for mansion tours on the day of your visit, on a first-come, first-served basis. Tour tickets can only be purchased at the admissions desk in the lobby of the Reichert Planetarium.
All tour tickets include general admission to the grounds and Museum wings. In order to get the most out of your visit, we suggest you allow 1-2 hours either before or after your tour to see the rest of the property. Keep in mind that the museum closes at 4 pm. Therefore, if you would like to take the tour at 3 pm, we suggest you arrive at 1 pm, as the museum will be closed after you finish your tour. We do no recommend visitors with children ages 8 and under take a tour. We have found most children do not like the historical nature of the tour and the frequent stopping. Also, the only way to get off a tour is to get to the end. Tour guides cannot leave their groups unattended while they escort you out. There are times when the last tour of the day has to be cancelled to accommodate an event. To avoid not being able to see a tour, please come early.
Then general admission is for you! All visitors to the Museum must purchase general admission during the day. General admission gives visitors access to the museum grounds, and all our museum wings, including the Memorial Wing, the Habitat & Stoll Wing, and the Hall of Fishes. Guests also have access to explore the courtyard and gardens surrounding the mansion, and to walk down to the Boat House. Unfortunately, the Boat House structure is closed to the public, but there are some nice views from outside. General admission does not give guests access to the area of the mansion where tours go. The only way to enter the living quarters of the mansion, and the areas of the mansion the tour covers, is to buy tickets for a mansion tour. If you purchase general admission and later decide you would like to go on a mansion tour, please return to the Planetarium lobby to purchase tickets. General admission also does not give guests access to see a planetarium show. Likewise, if you purchase general admission and then later decide to see a planetarium show, please return to the lobby of the Planetarium to purchase tickets. General admission is $10 for adults, $9 for students and seniors (62+), $7 for children 12 and under, and free for children 2 and under. General admission is available for purchase on the day of your visit. General admission is also included in all planetarium show ticket sales purchased through this website. Library passes cover general admission. Library passes do no cover guided tours of the Mansion, Grounds, or Planetarium Shows. There is no discount available in the gift shop for library pass holders, that program was discontinued several years ago. Reservations for planetarium shows cannot be made in advance when visiting with a library pass. The library pass is only a voucher, redeemable only at the time of your visit.
