“Each summer, we perform one play in traditional costumes and one in modern dress,” said Evan Donnellan, executive director of the Carriage House Players. “Hamlet is our traditional production this year.”Performances are given outdoors on the Courtyard stage (weather permitting) on Wednesdays and Fridays at 8:00 p.m., and on Sundays at 7:00 p.m.

In this tragedy about revenge, Claudius, King Hamlet’s brother, has been crowned the new king and has married Gertrude. Shortly after his mother’s marriage, Prince Hamlet meets his father’s spirit.

People believe that King Hamlet was killed by a poisonous snake bite. A ghost, however, tells Hamlet that the king was murdered by Claudius.

“The Carriage House Players’ Shakespeare Festival is once again a highlight of the Vanderbilt’s summer festivities,” said Lance Reinheimer, executive director of the Vanderbilt Museum.

“The Players perform on the stage in the beautiful Vanderbilt Mansion courtyard, where the Spanish-Mediterranean architecture adds a touch of timeless atmosphere and charm. This very popular festival is one of the reasons the Vanderbilt is a favorite regional destination every summer. Come join us and bring a picnic dinner to enjoy before the show.”
