William Vanderbilt: Automotive and Racing Pioneer

Mr. Vanderbilt, a pioneer race driver who competed in Europe, brought auto racing to the United States to help spur the development of the American automobile industry. He inaugurated the famous Vanderbilt Cup Races in 1904. That same year, he set a new land-speed record of 92.3 miles per hour in a Mercedes at a course in Florida.

In 1908, he built the prototype for the first toll road, the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway on Long Island, for his races. The parkway was the first road constructed specifically for automobiles – and a prototype for future highways. The roadway still exists in Suffolk County, N.Y., as County Road 67.
