Children in grades Pre-K through 5 can learn, create and have fun in five fall workshops offered by the Learning Center at the Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum. Sponsored by Northwell Health. The Center is located on the Museum grounds at 180 Little Neck Road, Centerport, NY 11721.

Parents can sign up for sessions that run December 28. All sessions, unless otherwise indicated, are from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Fee: $20 / $18 members.

October 8 
Ravenous Raptors 
Explore the collections, learn about birds of prey and make an owl using natural materials.
December 26 
Winter Solstice and Glowing Lanterns
In this workshop we’ll learn about the reason days are shorter in winter, observe the sun with a specialized telescope, and make lanterns using re-purposed materials.
December 27
Animals at Night and Diorama
Explore the collections, learn how wildlife adapts to less sunlight, and make our own miniature glow-in-the-dark diorama.
Grades 2- 4
October 26 (6:00 to 8:00 p.m.)
Spooky Scavenger Hunt

We’re turning off the lights for a scavenger hunt in the collections and will create specimen jars that can be used in any spooky Halloween display.

Grades 3-5
December 8 
Beneath the Waves
Explore the seas with Mr. V! We’ll learn about the diversity of life beneath the waves, examine preserved specimens, and make a marine invertebrate pillow.
Pre-K (ages 3 and 4, with an adult)
October 6 
Raptors and Owl Craft
We’ll hear a story in the bird room, explore the raptor collection, and make an owl using re-purposed materials.
November 17 
Bears and Mask Craft

We’ll hear a story in the wildlife dioramas, learn about bears, and make a mask.

December 28
Starry Night Snow Globe 
In this workshop we will visit the wildlife dioramas, learn how animals adapt to less sunlight, and make a twinkling snow globe.
FREE for the whole family:

Hands-On Activity
A Museum educator will be on hand all day in the Memorial Wing with preserved specimens for examination.  Free with admission.
