Each July and August, the Vanderbilt Museum offers creative summer workshops for pre-school children (ages 3-5, with an adult) and grades K-3. Programs for both grade levels involve visits with museum educators to the various collections galleries and doing creative projects. New in 2014: the Vanderbilt Education Center has added an astronomy component for grades K-3.

Museum and Astronomy Workshops, Grades K-3
The Sail the Seas with Mr. V program is a week of exploration, discovery and astronomy. In the morning session, museum educators take students through the collections of marine and natural history specimens, and cultural artifacts, and the wild-animal habitats. They learn about the fascinating creatures Mr. Vanderbilt encountered and the wondrous places he visited, and create works of art.
In the afternoon, students meet with astronomy educators. Activities include Planetarium shows, tour of the mobile science-astronomy classroom Discovering the Universe, moon-phase journals, construction of a scaled model of the Solar System, ultraviolet bead activities, capturing of micrometeorites, and more. (Activities are subject to change due to weather.)
Schedule: 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Cost: $250, or $225 for Vanderbilt Museum members. For reservations, call 631-854-5539.
