Discovering the Universe: Mobile Classroom is an outreach program – housed in a high-tech, 37-foot recreational vehicle – that serves schools and community groups in Suffolk and Nassau counties (grades 3 to 12). National Grid Foundation provides generous ongoing support for this education program.
News12 covered the Mobile Classroom’s recent visit to the Samoset Middle School in Brookhaven, Long Island.
The Classroom is designed to bring unique educational experiences beyond the Vanderbilt’s Planetarium programs. Several stations in the Mobile Classroom offer hands-on interactive exhibits that engage visitors in different topics. While each station is a self-contained module, an underlying theme connects all of the Classroom’s information and ideas. This unifying thread is an examination of how astronomers acquire knowledge about the Universe. Each module presents a different part of the process of obtaining information. The educational modules in the Classroom are Light, Telescopes, Digital Imaging, The 3-D Universe and Gravity.
